Small But Pack A Punch| Vitalicious EnergyLoaf Review

Do you love when you find a snack that taste great and is good for you? I saw the Vitalicious EnergyLoaves and I had to give them a try. Granted, I totally had one of Tee's special moments and I didn't get to enjoy all of my muffins; however, that was totally my fault. I'll get to that in just a moment.

Meal Prepping and Weight Loss

I realized after writing my last post I didn't go into detail about what I am doing for  meal prepping. OK, I forgot to take pictures too. Let me tell you, meal prepping has been a life saver. It takes the fuss out of what I am eating for the week. Also, I works for those days that I have not felt well enough to cook. I just pop a meal in the microwave and go. Works for me!

Mean Plan Saturday #3

It's time for me to post my meal plan for this week. I do apologize that I am a day late. I wrote it out and fell asleep with my laptop and everything. LOL! Anywho, you will see juices listed in this week's meal plan. I have a separate post about why I'm adding them in scheduled for tomorrow.

Please remember that I am going back to intermittent fasting for a bit. So, you will not find breakfast listed. If you would like to know why I removed breakfast, please read my last update.

Meal Plan Saturday #2

It's time for meal plan Saturdays! This week I am making one of my favorite low desserts, Pumpkin Bake. You will see days that I do not have a vegetable listed with a protein. I am off setting those carbs with the Pumpkin Bake. I am trying to keep my carbs at 20 grams total for each day, similar to Atkins Induction. If you would like any of the recipes that are not already posted on the site, you can check back on that day. I will update recipes as I go.

Meal Plan Saturdays #1

It's time for Mean Plan Saturday. I know I haven't posted a meal plan in a bit, but I want to start posting them again every Saturday. Planning my meals has been a tremendous help for me to stay on track. If I don't have a plan, I eat all types of crazy mess. I hope by sharing my plan that I can encourage and assist anyone who needs it. This meal plan is induction-friendly, so if you are on Atkins, you are more than welcome to give it a try. I will update some foods with links to the recipe on the day it is scheduled.

30 Day Picture Challenge Results!

I made it through the challenge. I wanted to share my 30 day picture challenge results with everyone. I will admit there were days I wanted to give up but I kept going. If you missed it, the challenge was for me to post a picture of what I had for dinner each night on my Healthy Living with Tiki account. If you want to see the pictures, click on the link. You don't have to be on Instagram or your phone to pull it up.

Are you ready? 30 day challenge start Nov 1st!

If you don't follow me on Twitter or Facebook then you may be a bit lost.  I know I haven't posted food pics and recipes lately. It seems like my latest post have documented my health challenges and how I'm handling them. At little depressing I will admit. So, this is what I'm up too... In an effort to get back on track and get back to why and how I started this blog, I am posting every day in the month of November on Instagram. Each day I will post what I am having for dinner. If it is something new that I haven't posted a recipe for, I will post it here on the blog.

Meal Plan for 4/29 - 5/4

Hello All!!!

I'm working on my menu for this week a little late. I'm also making my grocery list at the same time. I never did make it last week so I have a few things that I need to add to my last list. Sadly, I was scheduled to go on yesterday but was feeling lazy and for that most of my coupons expired. It just dawned on me while I was writing this post. It's a shame but lesson learned.

Here goes the menu for this week:

Mon and Tues: Baked chicken and green beans

Wed:

Lunch: Egg Drop Soup and grilled chicken breast
Dinner: Buffalo Wings

Thur:

Breakfast: Green Juice III w/w/1 scoop of BioPro Protein and KyoGreen
Lunch:  Grilled Salmon and Steamed Broccoli
Dinner: Turkey Burger w/cheese, mayo, ketchup, and turkey bacon

Fri:

Breakfast: Green Juice I w/1 scoop of BioPro Protein and KyoGreen
Lunch: Chicken and Spinach salad
Dinner: Steak w/onion, pepper, and mushrooms & Shrimp Alfredo using Dreamfield's Pasta or Tofu noodles

Sat:

Breakfast: Green Juice II w/1 scoop of BioPro Protein and KyoGreen
Lunch: Fried Cheese and Bacon Cheeseburger
Dinner: Tuna on a Spinach Salad (spinach, olives, bacon bits, feta, and dressing)

I normally don't eat breakfast but I'm trying to add juice in after runs and workouts. I slacked earlier this week and I have a busy day today so a juice today is out of the question. Also, I have a review coming for the BioPro Protein.

What's on your menu for this week?

Meal Plan for 4/21- 4/27

Hello Low Carber!

I need to get back to posting my meals for the week. You will notice I do have a few complex carbs in the mix for the week because I'm upping my cardio and adding strength training back in. I adding the carbs on the days I run and workout. Friday and Saturday evenings are in limbo. I have friends coming in town for a hair show this weekend and I already know Fri I will be having Chicken and Waffles at Gladys Knight's restaurant. Saturday, I'm not sure if the ladies want to go out or have me cook. I do know I will try to find a low carb option on the menu of where ever we go.

Lastly, I'm still doing intermittent fasting but I opened up my eating menu to 2pm - 10pm. This should be more than enough time for me to eat a nice lunch and dinner. If you are wondering why so late, I'm up normally until 2 or 3 am and I've been known to forget to eat. This helps me eat when I remember without guilt and not be hungry in the middle of then night.

Here is the plan so far:

Sun:
Lunch: I forgot to eat lunch today and doubled the amount for dinner, except the broccoli.      I  just had one portion of that b/c it is high in carbs.
Dinner: Baked chicken breast, broccoli w/cheese, and sauteed mushrooms

Mon:
Lunch: Green juice w/a scoop of unsweetened and unflavored protein powder
         Dinner: Baked Chicken Parmesan w/broccoli

Tues:
Lunch: Oatmeal w/pecans, peanut butter, almond milk, and protein powder
Dinner: Chicken Roll Ups and green beans

Wed:
Lunch: Baked wings and tomatoes w/mozzarella
            Dinner: Corned beef and cabbage

Thurs:
           Lunch: Baked Tilapia and salad
           Dinner: Corned beef and cabbage

Fri:
Lunch: Juice w/a scoop of protein powder
      Snack: Tomatoes and mozzarella
Dinner: Chicken and waffles w/butter and syrup?

Sat:
       Lunch: Bacon and eggs
       Dinner: Unsure

I plan on running and working out three times each this week. I'm going to run Mon, Tues and Fri. I plan to lift weights on Mon, Wed, and Fri. On Wed and Thurs I will workout using a video, ONdemand, or the elliptical

Women’s 8 Biggest Eating Mistakes

I saw the article below on Woman's Day.com. I know in the past before I started eating right and my healthy eating lifestyle I was guilty of most of these. Now, I'm just guilty of one but it's intentional. I don't eat breakfast. I've never been a breakfast eater and now I've added Intermittent Fasting to my routine.  Enjoy the tips and I hope they are useful to you.

Munching Missteps

You watch what you eat and feel pretty savvy about nutrition. But as you’re racing from one chore to the next, it’s easy to skimp on certain nutrients and overdose on others. The good news: “There’s no food or dietary component that you have to eliminate from a healthy diet,” says Rachel Begun, MS, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “But you have to plan a little to balance your diet the majority of the time.” Here are women’s most common nutrition mistakes and how to fix them.

You eat too much sodium.
The recommended daily allowance for sodium is 2,300 mg. But if you're over 50 years old, have high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease or are African American, your sodium intake shouldn't go above 1,500 mg per day. Unfortunately, the average American consumes about 3,300 mg daily, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). "Most of our daily sodium comes from restaurant meals and processed foods, not the salt shaker on your table," says Begun.

The fix: Eat more fresh foods or prepare more foods at home, where you control how much salt goes in. Reduce your consumption of packaged foods. Watch for sodium in condiments too. Even low-sodium soy sauce has a whopping 533 mg per tablespoon. Dine at restaurants that cook to order, so you can ask chefs to prepare items without salt and serve sauces on the side.

Your sugar intake is too high.
According to the American Heart Association, women should have no more than 6 tsp (24 g) of added sugar per day. But many of us get about 22 tsp per day. "The spoonful in your coffee isn't the biggest culprit," says Angela Lemond, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. "Sugar is hiding in places you don't expect."

The fix: Learn to identify added sugar in ingredients lists. It goes by names like high fructose corn syrup, evaporated cane juice, molasses, honey, agave nectar and barley malt syrup. Watch for added sugar in sauces, dressings and bottled drinks. And be wary of lowfat foods. When companies take out fat, they often add sugar to enhance flavor, says Lemond.

You skimp on fiber. "Fiber slows the rate at which your body digests food, so your energy levels remain more stable and you feel full longer, which helps with weight management," says Lemond. Fiber may also reduce your risk of constipation, heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer. Women need about 25 g per day, yet most of us eat just 10 to 15 g, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The fix: Up the amount of fiber you eat over a few weeks' time to cut your chances of bloating, and drink more water, which helps fiber move through the digestive tract. Start the day with breakfast cereals that contain 5 g of fiber or more. Eat a variety of beans and legumes, the skins on fruits and vegetables and whole grains.

You don't eat enough protein.
Too little protein can't keep hunger at bay, which can lead to mindless snacking and weight gain. "A piece of toast for breakfast isn't going to hold you as well as a protein-rich egg would," says Begun.Women need about 46 g of protein per day, according to the CDC.

The fix: Try an egg or nonfat or lowfat Greek yogurt, which contains about twice as much protein as regular yogurt, for breakfast. Snack on lowfat cottage cheese, lowfat cheese spread on whole-wheat crackers or nut butter on an apple or banana. Sprinkle nuts or seeds over salads and soup and eat more beans, soy products and greens such as kale and Swiss chard at lunch or dinner.

You overdo it on red and processed meats. Meat is an excellent source of protein, with about 21 g per serving. But according to the American Cancer Society, studies have shown a link between lunch meat, sausage and pepperoni and colon cancer. "Protein portion size is just 3 ounces," says Lemond. That's the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand.

The fix: Use meat as a flavor enhancer rather than the center of your plate. A crumble of bacon or sausage is plenty to spice up a dish. Slice up meat on a salad, make a stir-fry with more vegetables than red or processed meat and substitute beans for meat in chili. Choose 95% lean ground beef and lean cuts, which typically contain the word "round," as in top round, or "loin," as in tenderloin.

You don't drink enough water.

"Not drinking enough fluids can trigger hunger if you're even slightly dehydrated," says Lemond. While your needs vary each day based on how active you are, how hot and humid it is and how much water-heavy foods you're eating, here's a general recommendation: six to eight eight-ounce glasses per day, according to the NIH.

The fix: Before snacking, drink a glass of water and reevaluate how you're feeling in a few minutes. Up water's appeal by adding berries, mint leaves, citrus or cucumber slices. Drizzle a splash of fruit juice in seltzer water, or try hot or cold herbal teas. Fruits and veggies are about 85% water, and eating them counts toward your daily fluid intake.

You overdose on carbs. Forty-five to 65% of your total daily calories should come from carbs, according to the CDC. "The problem is we overindulge in them," points out Lemond. Not only are carbs in pasta and bread but also in fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains.

The fix: Focus on carbs loaded with vitamins, minerals and body-regulating fiber. Limit your intake of highly processed foods, such as white bread and pastries, since they've been stripped of fiber. Opt for more whole foods such as oats, beans, lentils and fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables. Substitute whole-wheat bread, crackers and pasta for white, or use lettuce or a corn tortilla wrap for sandwiches to cut back on bread.

You skip meals. "This is probably the biggest nutrition mistake on the list," says Begun. "There's consistent evidence that people who skip meals, especially breakfast, are more likely to be overweight. You need calories to burn calories."

The fix: Eat within one hour of getting up and throughout the day. If you don't enjoy breakfast, munch on something simple, such as a banana or nonfat or lowfat yogurt. If you'll be on the go all day, "pack snacks containing a little protein, a little fiber and a little fat so you'll feel fuller longer," says Begun. Good choices include yogurt, lowfat cheese sticks, hummus and veggies or a handful of almonds.

Chicken Roll Ups

I'm sorry but this post doesn't have a pic. I ate it before I remembered to take a pic. I know I'm horrible. I'll do better:)

Anywho, this recipe is super simple. I found it a couple of years ago online and made it my own. I would suggest using large chicken breast and splitting them in half to make two servings. I use garlic and adobo seasoning in everything.

Ingredients:

3 Large Chicken Breast (split in half)
8oz Cream Cheese (softned)
1/4 C Dried Chives (or to your taste)
12 slices Bacon

Toothpics

Cut each breast in half. Mix with chives and your favorite seasonings. Season breast to your liking and lay breast with cut side up. Place 2 TB of cream cheese on each breast. Roll each breast and wrap with two slices of bacon. Use toothpics to secure bacon and ends of chicken. Place in an oven at 350 for 30-45 mins or until bacon is done.

No meat? What was I thinking?

Hello all,

So, as I previously mentioned I am giving up pork and beef for the month of Sept. I don't know what I was drinking when I agreed to that b/c this is so hard. LOL! I really don't know if I'm going to make it ya'll. I keep thinking of bacon, cheeseburgers, LC grilled cheese with bacon. Oh my! This really is a challenge and my self control is about to fly out of the window. Must have bacon!!! I'm such a carnivore!

Otherwise, I'm doing great with my challenge for this month. I won't be able to run for a couple of days. My running pants split on the inside seam and rubbed my leg raw. I now have an open sore. So I have to let that heal but I will find other things to do that won't cause friction in that area. Yep, leave it to me to have this happen. LOL! How is everyone doing on their Sept goals?

Runner Girl!

As you can see I changed the name of my running related post. I think this fits better because I officially consider myself a runner.

Today was a light day. I only did 30 mins of running. I will post the half marathon training schedule I plan on using for the next 19 weeks. After I came home I did a little cleaning (I'll spare you) and I finally used my SWAT dvd. I've had that dvd for a couple of years and never used it. Since I no longer have a gym membership, I figured it was time to use some of the dvds I own. I thought the workout would be easy being that it incorporates resistance band and not standard weights. It's not the same but I do feel it more than I thought.

I'm dog tired at the moment.

Here is a post workout pic. You can tell my butt was kicked. LOL! Someone told me post pics or it didn't happen. I hope you all are ready for more pics of me looking beat up after a workout. BTW, pardon the boobage. I need bigger sports bras but I refuse to buy them just to not be able to wear them in a few months.

What exercises do you do, in combination with a good diet, to lose or maintain your weight?

Challenge Update

Yep, I have an update already.

Alright. Alright. Alright *in my Kevin Hart voice*

A few of my blogging divas have reached out to me about joining the challenge and getting it in gear. When I posted the challenge and as for accountability, I had no idea it would jump start others. Ladies, thank you for your support and joining me this month.

I also want to mention that I joined a challenge that doesn't allow beef, pork, or lamb. Lamb is easy b/c I don't eat it. The pork and beef is what I need to decrease. I have been responsible for the deaths of a significant number of cows and pigs. I would like to offer my sincere apologies for eating your family. LOL!

Anywho, I really need to cut back and I thought that challenge would help out a ton. If anyone is down for the "bootleg" no meat challenge, let me know. LOL. Turkey, chicken, and seafood is allowed this month.

Please leave a comment below or email me so that I can check on you this month and see how it's going.

Ya'll have me all super excited and stuff! hehe

Thanks again!

XOXO,

Tiki

As always, your comments are welcomed and appreciated. If you have questions or would like to join the challenge, email me at lowcarbtiki@yahoo.com.

Sept Challenge

Hello All!

So, Sept is my birthday month and I wanted to be back in a certain size. That goal didn't happen. I still believe it was from the extra running b/c I lost everywhere but my thighs. This month I'm going super hard. My 35th birthday is on the 28th and I must have a better body.

My goal for this month is to eat as clean Low Carb as I can. That includes fruits, veggies, and meats. I'm going to cut back on my frying. I still lose when I have my buffalo wings but I'm going to do more baking this month. Plus, my baked version of wings are just as good. I'm having some tonight as a matter of fact. I'm also trying to cut back on my peanut butter and plantain consumption. I've discovered that homemade banana ice cream over plantains, topped with peanut butter, SF fudge, and coconut is quite addictive. Delicious but I think I went a little over board on a very good thing. hehe

Anywho, here are my plans:

  • Juice no more than twice a day followed with protein
  • Stay consistent with my water intake and cut back on flavor packets in my water
  • Exercise 5-6 days per week
  • Eat clean LC
  • Get more sleep (even if I have to take my sleep meds)
  • Stretch daily (yoga or basic stretching)
  • No eating out unless I'm with friends
  •
  •
If anyone would care to join me, you are welcome to do so. I will be back tomorrow with pics and measurements.

XOXO,

Tiki

Run for My Life!

I had a much needed conversation with one of my running partners. She is an advance runner and I enjoy running with her b/c she pushes me. She told me this morning that I'm growing as a runner and she can see the difference. It's time for me to learn myself as a runner and work on my endurance. My focus has been building my pace and endurance back up to where it was last year before my accident. She told me to just focus on endurance and pace will come. Last night I ran at my old pace just for a moment and it felt so good. It was the push I needed to step it up and push harder.

I will say some disagree with me adding juicing to low carb. However, I have to do what is best for me on my journey. I'm not on a diet. I'm trying changing my life style and I'm learning the thing that I can sustain long term and permanently. Juicing is one of them. I no longer have issues with hydration. Overall I have a ton of energy and I think juicing has helped in my running progress.

As always I will say, what works for me may not work for other but at the point I'm experimenting and doing me. I think some people get confused and think I'm still on Atkins. I'm not. I'm low carb...Tiki's version of low carb. I'm juicing low GI fruits for the most part.

Hope everyone has a great day! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them on my blog or email me. Thanks for reading!

Goals for August?

July is coming to an end. I didn't meet my measurement goal but as I stated before I believe I know why. I'm starting to think about my August goals so that I can post them. I know I'm keeping my two a days but I think I'm going to back off beef a bit. I realize I ate a lot of beef this last month. Seriously more than normal. Anywho, come on everyone and let's start planning for next month.

Do you know what you are going to remove, add, or modify for August? Please share

Keeping it Juicy!!!

Oh yes, I'm still keeping it juicy. It's time to let my hair down. Hope ya'll ready for the other side of Tiki to come. Confused...just wait. The upcoming weeks will be an eye-opener.

Anywho, on to the topic of today... Contrary to what some thing it is possible to do low carb and still juice. As a matter of fact, I'm still in moderate ketosis. I credit my ability to juice and stay in to the amount of cardio I do. I believe I'm burning off the carbs in the juice I take in and then some.

The biggest thing for me on this journey is not being afraid to experiment or get kicked out of ketosis. I know how to get right back in and that it takes my body two days. So, I'm good with the consequences of my experiments. It's not for everyone but it works for me.

So, I'm going to keep it juicing until I get tired. I don't see that happening anytime soon!

What I've added new to my juices:

Cherries (anti-inflammatory)
Pears
Watermelon (keeps me hydrated beyond belief)
Kiwis

Thinking of adding broccoli. *clears throat* I'm going to think long and hard about that one. LOL

ETA: Broccoli is a no go! Eww...not my cup of tea at all!!!

What's new in your journey? Any new discoveries?

Back to Juicing

Yeah baby! I have restocked my fruits. For those who don't know, I bought fruit and veggies from Walmart a week or so ago and within three days it all went bad. By went bad I mean my oranges had mold all over them and even the CSR that was doing my refund had to comment. Luckily, I found out there is a farmer's market downtown. I got everything I needed from there except spinach for less than $20. That was with two days of shopping there. Yep, I went on Fri and went again on Sat with a friend. So, I will keep you all updated on what mixed I try and how they come out. I think this am I'm going to do a strawberry, orange, spinach mix. Not sure yet.
